How does referral tracking work?

For office teams · Updated October 26, 2026

Use this to understand how ContentsOps records who sent you a project and who gets credit for it.

Record the referrer

  1. Open the customer › Project tab › People on this claim.
  2. Choose Add person, find the contact who sent the project, and give them the Referrer role.
  3. Choose Add to claim. The referring company comes from the contact.

How this project came in

This card on the Project tab shows How it came in (if your company has set up those choices in Settings), Referred by, Took the call and Sales credit. Use Edit beside Referred by to change the referrer.

Credit is locked in

When a referrer is first set, the project records the referring company and gives sales credit to the referrer contact's owner. For a company-only referral, credit goes to the person who took the call. Sales credit never moves after that, even if the contact gets a new owner. Changing the referrer updates the referring company.

Where referrals show

The referrer's CRM record counts the project under Referred on Overview and lists it on the Projects tab with the Referred role. Adjusters and day-to-day contacts see it under Worked on, never Referred.

Referral reports

CRM › More › Sales Performance shows Top Referral Sources and Needs Attention to people who manage the sales team; Referral Value also needs access to CRM dollars. Reps who own contacts see their own numbers there, without referral reports.

On the phone

The phone shows referral counts on contact and company records. Setting the referrer is done on the web.
